PSMS Medan host Persija in the 2026/2027 League Cup opener

PSMS Medan will host Persija Jakarta on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, in the opening match of the 2026/2027 League Cup. I.League chose the tie as the centrepiece of the tournament's opening ceremony, which is also held in Medan on the same day.

The choice was announced by I.League competition director Asep Saputra at a press conference at GBK Arena in Jakarta on Tuesday, 27 October. According to Asep, the league operator wanted to highlight a Championship side hosting a Super League team.

That is the picture in Medan. PSMS currently play in the Championship, while Persija compete in the Super League and have kept up competitive form in the top flight. Both teams are in Group A of West Zone 1, together with Sumsel United.

The 2026/2027 League Cup features 38 clubs: 18 Super League sides and 20 Championship clubs. The other opening matches are played on the same day as PSMS against Persija.

For both clubs, the match in Medan is the first step in a new tournament that brings together clubs from the top two tiers of Indonesian football. Sumsel United are the other side they will face in the same group.
